I present to you, my second favorite home I’ve seen for sale in Chicago:
There are a very small number of changes I would make, but I love it.

I’ll just live in that wine cellar by the spiral staircase
![]() 10/11/2018 at 13:05 |

I’d buy a lot of other stuff with that kind of money before buying a house in Chicago...holy shit
The amount of money some people have is obscene. Shit, park that money in a damn investment account and live off your $500,000 yearly salary elsewhere

Price cut: -$1,000,000
lol... jeez

Its like a fortress, I love it.

That garage floor needs to go. There’s no way you could roll a floor jack over that.

You and I have very similar tastes. Holy shit what an awesome house.

I, uh, holy shit, yes!

It really is quite amazing. This is my #1 favorite:
Zillow
.

This sounds more like a problem for my on-staff mechanic.
![]() 10/11/2018 at 13:23 |

That’s what initially drew me to it.

10/10 would buy if I was a billionaire and that was in Ottawa, not Chicago.

Race d eck yo!

That’s nothing, there’s this one house we had been keeping an eye on, price cuts from $13M to $8M, didn’t sell over the course of 2 years
, taken off market in July.
![]() 10/11/2018 at 13:26 |
|
I’d argue there are
worse places you could live for
more money.
![]() 10/11/2018 at 13:27 |

If you think Mrs. Humpkins and I wouldn’t set up a bed in there, you’d be wrong!
![]() 10/11/2018 at 13:28 |

If this house were in Ottowa, pretty sure we’d already be looking for some
way to get it. Who needs all their internal organs, right?
![]() 10/11/2018 at 13:29 |

There are...but the options on the other side (better places for less money) are so many.
Also, the property taxes alone on this place is much more than I make in a year.

For $8MM, I think I’d rather have this garage:

Or this view:

![]() 10/11/2018 at 13:30 |

That is very kind of you. I was totally good with a hammock or a cot!
![]() 10/11/2018 at 13:31 |
|
It’s be a pain in the ass to try to roll under a car on a creeper with those brick floors and the ceilings are too low for a lift. No sale.
![]() 10/11/2018 at 13:40 |

Hire mechanic, build second mechanic-specific garage, problem solved.
![]() 10/11/2018 at 13:43 |

If I had the desire to move to California, and spend $8M
, that second house (with some minor updating) would be the winner between the two
.
![]() 10/11/2018 at 13:46 |

Better for less money, yeah, probably numerous. That’s a whole different topic
, property taxes in Chicago
are so jacked
up yet no one can figure out where all the money is going.

I mean its cool, but its not old firehouse turned into a single family home cool
https://chicago.curbed.com/2017/11/3/16603374/for-sale-home-old-firehouse-north-center
if i won the lotto and wanted to move to the city proper this is what id aim for
![]() 10/11/2018 at 13:53 |

i think that happened to scottie pippins old house t0 o, massive price cuts
![]() 10/11/2018 at 13:54 |
|
I’d believe it.
![]() 10/11/2018 at 13:57 |

Cities just aren’t my thing...I’d take 1000 acres in the middle of no where over that any day of the week. Damn I wish I could afford something like that...maybe some day. Who am I kidding I’d blow all my money on cars and a warehouse before I could afford a house like that.
![]() 10/11/2018 at 13:58 |

I really like those. Converted fire houses are usually pretty neat but I have seen some that were done in the ‘
90s or early ‘
00s that removed any distinct characteristics and the interior was just the typical boring builder grade rental stuff. Those two are well done.
I’ve always wanted to buy a very old church (with the right ancient look about it) and convert it. There’s
one nearby
that was converted to a multi-unit condo property but it had/has so much single family home potential.
![]() 10/11/2018 at 14:00 |

Yeah, the first one is pretty McMansiony. The house you posted is really really awesome. But I feel like they style fits somewhere that is cold haha
![]() 10/11/2018 at 14:02 |
|
i wouldnt know what to do with all the space of an old church, also dont like churches in general lol most give me the heebie jeebies
![]() 10/11/2018 at 14:03 |
|
Also, completely unrelated but what is the car in you avatar? I can’t figure it out...it kind of looks GTR- ish but the headlights aren’t right.
And is it yours?
![]() 10/11/2018 at 14:03 |
|
You might be right about that. I have a hard time imagining this house (as-is) in a year round warm location.
![]() 10/11/2018 at 14:05 |
|
I’m not sure I’d know what to do either, but I’ve still always wanted to. There has always been something a bit creepy to me about old churches, but I think that’s what I like about them.

Close, it’s a Nismo 370Z. I came close to getting one a few years ago when I was really regretting selling my 350Z upon moving to Chicago - and we briefly had the need for a second car. But things changed and we didn’t need a second car (and considering the cost of having second car in the city it wasn’t worth it if it wasn’t necessary).
I’m torn because I love manageable cities, but I grew up in Alabama so I like the idea of a nice house on lots of land. However - blowing all the money on cars and a warehouse, I’d go that route any day of the week if I could. Regardless of location.

There are some houses in Denver that look like this. I could also see it as a mountain get
away haha

Very beautiful, especially that fourth p icture.
![]() 10/11/2018 at 15:01 |

That’s gorgeous as well

I knew before I even looked that this was in Lincoln Park.
No drywall was harmed in the building of that house - it’s cool, but maybe a *little* less exposed brick/wood would have been nice...
![]() 10/11/2018 at 15:22 |
|
I don’t mind it being as much exposed brick, but I can see how it might be a bit much.
There is another one similar, in Lincoln Park, but smaller. Last on the market about 5 years ago.
![]() 10/11/2018 at 15:24 |
|
The amount of glass used is quite impressive.
![]() 10/11/2018 at 15:26 |
|
I like exposed brick - but too much of it makes the house dark. I think they crossed the line, personally.
Still, I’d make do...
![]() 10/11/2018 at 15:27 |
|
I could very easily see it in Denver, or similar. Would be a nice mountain getaway.
![]() 10/11/2018 at 15:31 |
|
I’d imagine that’s why they incorporated so many windows. To offset that potential darkness.
I didn’t finish my thought for some reason - that smaller one that is very similar in design and layout and fortress walls actually only had one wall that was exposed brick (in every room that touched that wall I believe
). I could live with either if I
had
to.

That is amazing.
